THE EFFECT OF LOCAL COMMUNITY STUDIES MODEL IN SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHING ON STUDENTS' ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND ATTITUDES TOWARDS THE COURSE

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of the local community studies model in social studies teaching on students' academic achievement and attitudes towards the course. In the research, a Semi-Experimental Design with Pre Test-Post Test Control Group was used. While the lessons in the control group were taught with question-answer and lecture methods; The lessons in the experimental group were planned and conducted within the framework of the activities determined according to the local community studies model. Within the scope of local community studies; Historical field trip, drama, sightseeing, interview, history exhibition and written/visual media product file preparation activities are included to be applied in the fields of "Culture and Heritage" and "People, Places and Environments". The school where the research was conducted was determined by random sampling method. The sample of the study consisted of a total of 40 students studying in two different classes of the same grade in a secondary school located in Aziziye district of Erzurum province in the 2017-2018 academic year. The research data were collected by "Academic Achievement Test" and "Social Studies Course Attitude Scale". The collected data were subjected to independent groups t-test in the SPSS program. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the post-test mean scores of the experimental group, in which the local community studies model was applied, and the control group, where the methods carried out by expression, question-answer and classroom practices were used, differed significantly in favor of the experimental group. Based on the findings, it was concluded that the local community studies model used in teaching the subjects within the scope of "Culture and Heritage" and "People, Places and Environments" increased the academic achievement of students and positively affected their attitudes towards the course.
