FEAR OF THE 4TH GRADE PRİMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS TOWARDS MATHEMATİCS COURSE AND UNDERLYİNG CAUSES

In the present research, it has been aimed to determine the level of fear of mathematics course among 4th grade primary school students, and the reasons lying behind the fear of mathematics course. It is a descriptive research conducted through the use of scanning model. The research was conducted with the participation of 172 4th grade primary school Students studying at public schools in a province of Central Anatolia in the spring semester of 2016-2017 academic year. In the research, data was collected through a survey, containing two questions; one closed-ended and one open-ended. Descriptive statistics (frequency and percentage) were used for the analysis of the closed-ended question, while descriptive analysis method was used for the analysis of the open-ended question. According to the findings from the research, it was determined that most of the students did not have fear of mathematics and the fear of mathematics emanated mostly from the course, then the students themselves, teachers and the environment. At the end of the research, various suggestions were made for the prevention and elimination of fear of mathematics.
